Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity's annual Veterans Build is an event that brings together veterans, active-duty soldiers, community partners, and volunteers to help build and repair local veterans' homes. It is a home repair service week and a call to action for volunteers looking to offer a helping hand to qualified veteran homeowners in our community. This event also focuses on increasing awareness of the challenges many veterans face in obtaining stable shelter for themselves and their families, and services Habitat for Humanity offers through its Veterans Initiative program.

Phyllis McCroskey
Retired Army
Years of Service:1981-1993
Rank at Separation: Sergeant, E-5
MOS: 71LF5, Administrative Postal NCO
Career Highlights: Ms. Phyllis served two tours in Honduras during the 1980s, as well as assignments in Hanau, Germany, and Fort Bragg, NC. While serving in the Army, she also had the privilege of playing basketball for the Army. She was a basketball player long before serving, and she was proud to play for her service as well. Ms. Phyllis calls herself a “career student,” having taken classes at both Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College. She is a Master Gardener and a volunteer. In fact, Ms. Phyllis has been volunteering with the Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity for over two years. She can always be counted on to volunteer at Veteran and Women Build events, as well as other construction and painting events. She’s also a frequent patron of the ReStore.
How long have you lived in the Fayetteville Area?
Ms. Phyllis was born in South Carolina and raised just down the street in Dunn, NC. However, she has lived in Fayetteville for 42 years.
Tell me about your relationship with Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity.
Ms. Phyllis was inspired by the President Jimmy Carter project and his open support of Habitat for Humanity. Phyllis followed Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity on social media and immediately started getting more involved by volunteering. She was most impressed with our Veteran Build and Aging in Place Program. As a Senior and a Veteran, she felt drawn to serve with us. After volunteering at Veteran’s Build 2024, Ms. McCroskey was convinced to apply to have some repairs done on her own home. Here we are, almost two years later, and she is finally about to reap what she has sown into so many others.
