Rebuilding Dreams: Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity Partners with NC OSBM-DR to Provide New Homes

In the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Matthew and Florence, many families in North Carolina find themselves still grappling with the daunting task of rebuilding their lives. Among them were Mr. Mathis and Ms. Spell, two individuals whose homes had been severely damaged to the point where repair was no longer a viable option. However, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity (FAHFH) and the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management Disaster Recovery (NC OSBM-DR), their stories have taken a positive turn.

Mr. Mathis is a dedicated father of seven and a former Public Works employee. Meanwhile, Ms. Spell's family home, built in 1948 and filled with cherished memories, was also left in ruins. Despite the challenges they faced, both individuals harbored hopes of once again having a place to call home.

Fortunately, relief came in the form of a partnership between FAHFH and NC OSBM-DR. Through grant funding allocated for Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Matthew's recovery, NC OSBM-DR provided crucial support for the reconstruction of replacement homes. This collaboration not only alleviated the financial burdens of rebuilding but also ensured that Mr. Mathis and Ms. Spell would have access to safe, quality housing once more.

Under the coordination of FAHFH and close collaboration with EverDream Builders, the reconstruction of both homes began to take shape. For Ms. Spell, the prospect of a new kitchen and a spacious porch where she could enjoy her landscaping and engage with her neighbors filled her with excitement.

On March 18th, 2024, the dedication ceremonies for both homes took place, marking a significant milestone in the journeys of Mr. Mathis and Ms. Spell. Surrounded by loved ones and members of the community, their new homes will not only provide shelter but also serve as tangible reminders of the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity and the power of a supporting community and partners.

Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity cannot recognize and thank the NC OSBM-DR enough for directing and funding the projects while administering this program, as these projects would not be possible without the support and partnership with NC OSBM-DR.

As FAHFH continues its mission to provide affordable housing and support local families, there are numerous ways for individuals to get involved. Whether through volunteering time, making donations, or spreading awareness, every contribution makes a difference.
