Thank you for your interest in becoming a Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity homeowner.

We don’t build for anyone. We build with everyone.

Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing ministry. We seek to eliminate poverty housing in Cumberland, Clinton, and Sampson Counties to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

All our applicants must meet some basic eligibility criteria, like a need for housing, the ability to pay a mortgage, and a willingness to partner with 300 sweat equity hours of volunteer work and educational workshops. Partner family selections are made in compliance with the Federal Credit Equal Opportunity Act on an impartial and non-discriminatory basis. Race, color, national origin, marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, age, religion, and disability play no part in the choice.

Our standard three-bedroom home is 1060 square feet and our standard four-bedroom home is 1200 square feet. Home sizes are based on each qualifying family’s needs. All homes are furnished with a new range and refrigerator.

Habitat houses meet or exceed all applicable local and state building codes. We use all new materials. Our houses must pass city and county inspections just like all other construction in our area.

Through Habitat, it is possible to purchase and live in a Habitat home with low monthly mortgage payments. Habitat homes are sold at cost, with interest free mortgages. Your mortgage payment includes property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, and termite inspections.

Homeowners are selected based on their need for decent, affordable housing, ability to afford a monthly mortgage payment, and willingness to partner in building houses with Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity.

Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership Program typically takes between 12 and 18 months to complete. To help determine if our program is right for you, ask yourself the questions below:

  • Are you at least 18 years old (legally able to contract)?

  • Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident?

  • Have you been a resident of Cumberland, Sampson, Bladen County or employed in Cumberland, Sampson, Bladen County, for the past 12 months?

  • Do you have two years’ worth of stable, documented income or employment history?

  • Am I able to make a deposit of around $3,000 at closing?

  • Can I afford a monthly mortgage payment of between $500 and $600?

  •  Does your total annual household does not exceed the limit for your family size (see table below)?

  • Will I (and my co-applicant, should I have one) be able to commit to attending all required educational workshops and contribute 300 hours of sweat equity on my home

In order to be eligible for our Homeownership Program, you must:

DEMONSTRATE NEED:  You may qualify if your present housing is substandard or unsafe, overcrowded, government subsidized, or unaffordable, or if you are homeless or do not qualify for a conventional mortgage.

HAVE THE ABILITY TO PAY:  The ability to pay is review ed on a case-by-case basis.  It is predicted on income, expenses, current debt, and other obligations.  You must have a stable, documented source of income; no unsatisfied liens, judgements, or levies; and the ability to pay $500-$600 a month for a mortgage payment.

BE WILLING TO PARTNER:  You must be willing to submit to a home visit and meeting with our Family Matters Committee during the application process.  Approved Homebuyers must be willing to complete all mandatory requirements of our Homeownership Program. You cannot choose the specific location of your home and must be willing to accept a newly constructed or rehabilitated home, assigned based on availability. You must also agree to incur no new debt as a condition of acceptance into the program.

If you would like to be considered for our Homeownership Program, please complete the attached sheet and return it to us. We will then schedule you for a homeowner orientation meeting.
