Fayetteville Habitat Dedicates the first Thrivent Financial and Faith Build Home

Fayetteville, NC (March 16, 2017) – Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity (FAHFH) will dedicate the Kirk family home marking the culmination of the Thrivent Builds and Habitat for Humanity partnership to build affordable housing. The home dedication will begin at 4 pm on Friday, April 7 at 236 Hedgepeth Street.

The construction of the Kirk home was partially funded through the partnership with Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity. Thrivent Builds has empowered Thrivent members and other volunteers to help build or repair over 4,000 Habitat homes across the country since 2005. In addition, over 1,000 home building trips have taken place internationally and domestically through the Thrivent Builds Worldwide program.  Thanks to the more than 2.3 million members of Thrivent Financial, and other volunteers, Thrivent Builds is able to contribute to the improvement of communities like Fayetteville.

Thrivent Financial contributed a total of $51,000 to the construction of the Kirk home on Hedgepeth Street. Thrivent Financial funds were matched by the generous donations of area churches to include: Berean Baptist Church; Camp Ground United Methodist; First Christian Church; First Presbyterian Church; Friendship Missionary Baptist Church; Hay Street United Methodist Church; Haymount United Methodist Church; MacPherson Presbyterian Church; Presbytery of Coastal Carolina; Saint Patrick Catholic Church; Snyder Memorial Baptist Church; and Village Baptist Church.

Now a Wendy’s manager, Ms. Samala Kirk has worked in food service for 15 years. She has three boys between the ages of 2 and 16 and currently lives in an apartment. Ms. Kirk’s faced several challenges on her path to homeownership.  She was caretaker for her aging father and was working to have him move in with her, to provide him with a safe and comfortable home. He died before she could make that dream a reality but she did not let that deter her. She remained committed to owning a home- both for herself and for her boys’ futures.  Growing up in a safe and stable home is the foundation her boys will lean on for their future success. The Kirk family has completed 300 hours of sweat equity, working alongside community volunteers to complete the construction of their own home.

“As a Habitat volunteer for the last two years, I have enjoyed being a part of local home builds and repair projects that help reduce substandard housing in our area,” said Mark Trudeau, Thrivent Financial. “It is a moving experience to work alongside amazing and deserving Habitat families.”
