FAHFH Seeks Qualified Homeowner Partner for first Sampson County Build

Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity (FAHFH) will soon kick off the construction of a home in Sampson County. This home marks the first phase of FAHFH’s commitment to build one additional home in both Sampson and Bladen counties thanks to funds from the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation.

The SECU Foundation and Habitat for Humanity® of North Carolina (HHNC) have signed a formal Memorandum of Agreement for a joint initiative to expand affordable housing across North Carolina–the SECU Habitat Mountains to the Sea Challenge. SECU Foundation’s Challenge will provide a significant investment of $10 million over a three year period for HHNC to build one new (or thoroughly renovated) home in each of NC’s 100 counties.

“With the SECU Foundation’s pledge of up to $10 million in grants and financing, Habitat has an opportunity to build in both the 75 counties that we are already serving and also in the 25 counties that lie outside the service area of any one affiliate,” said Greg Kirkpatrick, executive director of HHNC.

Habitat homes are sold at cost, with 20-25 year interest free mortgages. Currently the mortgage payment on a three-bedroom Habitat house is approximately $500.00 a month. This payment includes property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and termite coverage. Homeowners are selected based on their need for decent, affordable housing, ability to afford a monthly mortgage payment and willingness to partner in building houses with Habitat.

A standard three-bedroom Habitat home is 1,060 square feet and the standard four-bedroom home is 1,200 square feet. Home sizes are based on each qualifying family’s needs. All homes are furnished with a new range and refrigerator with ice maker.

FAHFH is actively recruiting potential homeowners for the Bladen County home. For more information, and to see if you or someone you know meets the eligibility requirements, please contact Habitat’s VP of Family Services, Jimmy Teal, by calling (910) 483-0952.
